God could not be everywhere and therefore be made mothers.

"Functionalist"means focusing on the function or functions of texts or translations. (Nord 2001:1) .The word"functionalism"is an umbrella term for various theories that study translation with a functiona perspective. However, the coming-into-being of functionalist theory needs a period of time, and before that"translation proper"is frequently associated with word-for-word fidelity.

2. Translation theory before Functionalist

With the development of translation practice and research translators were confronted with the dilemma of choosing between faithfu to the SL text and adjustment to the target situation, and they began to observe that different situations require different renderings.

In 1970 Nida's formulation of dynamic equivalence emerged and was perhaps the most influential one in those days.In The Theory and Practice of Translation, Nida defines"translating"as"translating consists in reproducing in with the receptor language the closest natural equivalent o the source language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style" (Nida&Taber, 2003:74) .Dynamic equivalence approach has shaken off the constraints of the prevalent equivalence theory. But we can also see from it that although Nida advocates"content first and form second", it has not change its emphasize on equivalence. The difference is that he adds that attention should be paid to the purpose of translation, to the roles of both the translator and the receivers and to the cultura implication of the translation process. For these reasons, a brand-new translation theory is badly called for to better deal with the situations in which equivalence-oriented theories do not work. And the emergence o German functional school responds to that call, which puts the purpose (skopos) at the first place and translator has been given much more freedom in the process of translation.

As against the traditional conception of linguistic equivalence, Nida has taken a communicative approach and distinguishes formal and dynamic equivalence in translation. In The Theory and Practice o Translation, he defines"translating"as"translating consists in reproducing in with the receptor language the closest natural equivalent o the source language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style" (Nida&Taber, 2003:74) .We can see from it that although Nida advocates"content first and form second"and calls this method sociolinguistics, he still delineates translation in the language level. He fails to recognize that the nature of translation is not only a pure language conversion, but also the cross-cultural exchange built on language form For centuries'practice, translators have felt that the process of translating should involve both procedures:a faithful reproduction of source-tex qualities in one situation and an adjustment to the target audience in another (Nord, 2001:9) .Equivalence-based translation theories can not be appropriate in all situations. In 1960s and 1970s, the theory of linguistics dominated the world, but the translation theory circles in Europe did not pay sufficient attention to the solution of above-mentioned problems.

i grew up without my father around. he left when i was two years old, and even though my sister and i were lucky

enough to have a wonderful mom and caring grandparents to raise us, i felt his absence. and i wonder what my life would have been like had he been a greater presence.

that’s why i’ve tried pretty hard to be a good dad for my

own kids. i haven’t always succeeded, of course ?C in the past, my job has kept me away from home more than often i would like to, and the burden of raising two young

girls sometimes would fall too heavily on michelle.

but between my own experiences growing up, and my

ongoing efforts to be the best father i can be, i’ve learned a couple of things about what our children need most from their parents.

first and foremost, they need our time. and more important than the quantity of hours we spend with them is the quality of those hours. maybe it’s just asking about their day, or taking a walk together, but the smallest moments can have the biggest impact.

they also need structure, including learning the values of

self-discipline and responsibility. malia and sasha may live in the white house these days, but michelle and i still make sure they finish their schoolwork, do their chores, and walk the dog.

and above all, children need our unconditional love ?C

whether they succeed or make mistakes; when life is easy and when life is tough.

and life is tough for a lot of americans today.more and more kids grow up without a father figure. others mia father who’s away serving his country in uniform. and even for those dads who are present in their children’s lives, the recession has taken a harsh toll. if you’re out of a job or struggling to pay the bills, doing whatever it takes to keep

the kids healthy, happy and safe can understandably take precedence over everything else.

that’s why my administration has offered men who want to be good fathers a little extra support. we’ve boosted

we’re doing this because we all have a stake in forging

stronger bonds between fathers and their children. and you

can find out more about some of what we’re doing at

but we also know that every father has a personal

responsibility to do right by our kids as well. all of us can encourage our children to turn off the video games and pick up a book. all of us can pack a healthy lunch for our son, or go outside and play ball with our daughter. and all of us can teach our children the difference between right and wrong, and show them through our own example the value in treating one another as we wish to be treated.

our kids are pretty smart. they understand that life won’t always be perfect, that sometimes, the road gets rough, that even great parents don’t get everything right.

Columbine parents praise essay by mom of shooter

DENVER — Parents and survivors of the massacre at Columbine High School are saying good things about an essay released Tuesday by the mother of shooter Dylan Klebold.

Susan Klebold made the most detailed public remarks by any parent of the two Columbine killers in an essay published in O, The Oprah Magazine. She said in the essay she had “no inkling” her son was suicidal or depressed.

The essay sparked strong emotions for Connie Michalik, whose son, Richard Castaldo, was shot and partially paralyzed in the rampage. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 23 others before killing themselves.

The shooters’ parents have said little in public since the massacre. They gave depositions in a lawsuit filed by victims’ families, but a judge in ordered those depositions sealed for 20 years after the case was settled out of court.

Survivors and their families have been left wondering about the boys’ parents in the decade since the shootings.

“You know, I always wondered how she felt and what she went through. ‘Cause I know I went through a living hell, and I was always sure she did, too,” Michalik told The Associated Press.

Michalik, who has never met Susan Klebold, said reading the essay answered some of her questions about the Klebold family.

“I applaud her for the courage to talk about this,” Michalik said Tuesday.

In the essay, Susan Klebold described the day of the shooting. She at first feared Dylan had been shot at school, not that he was one of the perpetrators.

Susan Klebold said the family was evacuated from their home the afternoon of the massacre because authorities feared even Dylan’s residence may have been rigged to explode. Still, she said, it took months for relatives to accept that the quiet boy who loved origami and Legos was to blame for the violence.

“We didn’t know that he and Eric had assembled an arsenal of explosives and guns,” Susan Klebold wrote. “We believed his participation in the massacre was accidental or that he had been coerced. We believed that he did not intend to hurt anyone.”

The magazine released excerpts from the essay last week and published the full text Tuesday.

A magazine spokeswoman said Susan Klebold has turned down several interview requests over the years but agreed several months ago to share an essay. There were no plans for her to appear on the show.

In an introduction to the essay, Oprah Winfrey told readers, “Since the day her son participated in the most devastating high school shooting America has ever seen, I have wanted to sit down with Susan Klebold to ask her the questions we’ve all wanted to ask — starting with, ‘How did you not see it coming?’ and ending with ‘How did you survive?’”

A spokeswoman for Susan Klebold has said there would be no further comment.

One of the shooting’s survivors, Krystal Miller, said Tuesday she has long had questions for the Klebolds but understood their silence.
