Leon, 12, was born without fingers on his left hand. That didnt stop him from being able to do many tasks. But Leon could not grasp more than one object at a time. So Leons father, Paul, created a prosthesis ( 假肢) , using a 3D printer. Now Leon has fingers that open and close. It was a do-it-yourself, father and son adventure.

When Leon was a baby, his doctor advised his parents not to give him a prosthetic hand until he was in his early teens.“The doctor said Leon should first learn to get full use out of the hand he was born with, ”says Paul. As Leon got older, his father looked into buying a prosthetic hand, which can cost as much as $30, 000. Paul found a more affordable solution.

One day, Paul discovered a video on the Internet about Robohand, a prosthesis created with a 3D printer. He downloaded the free instructions and called Robohand s creators for advice. They told him all he needed was a 3D printer—which costs around $2, 000—and some materials.

Luckily, Leon s school had recently purchased a 3D printer and it offered to help Paul build the hand for Leon.“We used a soccer shin guard (护胫) , cardboard, and tape. They cost about$10, ”says Paul.

With his new hand, Leon can do things better.“I can help my mom more, because now I can carry two grocery bags, ”he says.

Leons father has already built several hands for Leon. Leon helps design each one. He says theres one thing in particular that he wants to do with a future prosthesis.“The goal, ”he tells the reporter from the local evening paper, “is to be able to tie my shoelaces”.

By teaching your children fire safety you can make sure they know what to do when a house fire occurs.

Making sure that your children know exactly what is required of them cuts down on the chaos of the emergency situation and helps keep your family safe and secure.

Make sure your children know how to correctly stop, drop, and roll and feel confident in the fact that it works. It puts out the flames. The usual response to clothing catching on fire is to run around and run about wildly, which only exposes the fire to more oxygen and feeds the flames. Your children should also know to touch door handles before opening the door to see if they are hot. If they are, it means that there s a fire in the next room, and they should leave the door closed and find another route out of the house.

Make sure your children understand that they should never play with lighters or matches.Fires started by playing with these things are the leading cause of fire- related injuries in children under five years old. Many children are fascinated by lighters and matches and want to experiment with lighting things on fire to see what happens.

Do regular fire drills to practice your evacuation plan so that your family knows what to do in an emergency. Make sure everyone knows all the possible exit points of the house that they can use;a fire in your home will be a chaotic situation, and its best to make sure all members of your family know your evacuation plan well enough so that it issecond natureand they don t have to waste time thinking if a fire starts. Quick, determined response to a fire will save your family memberslives.

28. What should children do when their clothing catches on fire?

A. Call the firefighter for help at once.

B.Run around quickly to put out the flames.

C.Stop, drop and roll without delay.

D. Feel confident and dont be afraid of fire.

29. When door handles feel hot, what should children do?

B.Open the door and see if there is a fire.

C.Leave the door open and rush out of it.

D.Stay where they are and ask for help.

30. What should parents do with items like lighters and matches?

A. Let them play with them.

B.Hide them from the children.

C.Experiment with them.

D. Throw them out of the house.

31. What does second nature in the last paragraph mean?

A.Knowing how a fire starts and spreads.B.Thinking carefully before action.

B.Thinking carefully before action.

C.Doing something with determination.

D.Knowing what to do without thinking.

Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on We Chat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new“species”of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers (低头族) .

Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.

Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real.

Your health is the first to bear the effect andresult of it.“Constantly bending your head tocheck your cell phone could damage your neck, ”Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying.“Theneck is like a rope that breaks after long-termstretching.”Also, staring at cell phones for longperiods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.

But thats not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.

It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.

32. For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragraph 2?

A. To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.

B. To advertise the cartoon made by students.

C. To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.

D. To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.

33. Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have?

A. He will cause the destruction of the world.

B. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.

C. His social skills could be affected.

D. He might get separated from his friends and family.

34. Which of the following may be the authors attitude towards phubbing?

A.Supportive.

B.Optimistic.

C.Opposed.

D.Objective.

35.What may the passage talk about next?

A.Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing.

B.People addicted to phubbing.

C.Some advice on how to use a cell phone.

D.Consequences of phubbing.

Teenagers are especially likely to suffer loneliness. Here are some suggestions for speeding a recovery from loneliness.

Reach out to others, but start small. A smile and a friendly greeting for the student behind you in line at the cafeteria won t make you best friends.36It also can make it easier to interact (一起活动) the next time.

Find a safe place to make connections. If going to the school dance makes you feel like you just don t belong, try joining a special- interest group. Maybe its the drama club or the marching band.37

Find other ways of making connections.Lonely people hunger for acceptance and friend-ship.Sometimes feeling accepted and liked comesmore easily when you do something for others.38Teach a child in reading.Take notes fora disabled classmate. You might be surprised at the connections you make after reaching out in these ways.

39Loneliness is an absence of quality friendships, not of a particular quantity of friends.Thats why its important to know how to select a friend. The best friendships are those based on similar values and attitudes.

You get what you expect, so expect the best.If you expect others to be friendly, you will behave in similar ways.

40It goes away as teens learn how tofind their way through their social world and con-nect with others.

A.Some teens arent so adaptable, however.

B.So consider becoming a volunteer.

C.But it will make you both feel pretty good.

D.Choose the right people.

F. For most young people, loneliness is only temporary.

第2 处:before改为after。

第5处:in改为with。

短语make up ones mind中, mind为可数名词。

第7 处:her改为him。for之后的代词指代的是the old man。
