一、英语辩论与独立学院大学英语教学

1.独立学院大学英语教学现状。笔者所在学院每学期都会召集学生代表和英语教师进行座谈会。据统记,几乎每次座谈会学生都会提出以下类似问题:听力课听不懂,说又没有太多机会说,到底该怎么培养听说能力啊?读写课就是教师讲解课文翻译课文,实在是没兴趣,以前一直学应试英语,到了大学居然还是一样,太失望了。

这些问题的原因在于独立学院的学生底子薄、自主学习能力差、对学习不甚感兴趣,同时又有着急功近利的心态,渴望一蹴而就掌握他们认为最有用的听说技能;教师很难指引学生在语言学习中,正确地进行“可理解输入”和“可理解输出”。Krashen的输入理论和Swain的输出理论强调语言必须被学生所理解,也就是学生能懂并可以马上运用的语言;语言的习得仅靠可理解输入是不够的,还要进行可理解输出,学生需要对将要输出的语言进行思考,使语言更容易理解。

2.辩论培养学生英语实际应用能力。在辩论中,学生应特别注意倾听和把握对方的语言信息。建构主义认为,“语言输入的材料仅仅具有可以理解的特点还远远不够,还要能引起学习者主观上的注意,才有可能谈得上被理解,从而被吸收。如果忽略学习者的主观能动性,不管输入如何可理解,对于学习者而言都是毫无意义的”。英语辩论教学就是指导学生在平时主动去听,在辩论的过程中,应特别注意聆听和把握对方的主要信息点,然后用英语来揭露对方的谬误,陈述自己的观点。这样学生就充分发挥了主观能动性,进行了有效地“听”和“说”。

辩论要求有力的论点、充分的论据和严密的逻辑,而且议题涉及环保、教育、科技、体育、医疗等社会热点题材,这就要求学生经常读书看报,扩充自己的知识面。辩论的目的是要说服别人,论据是必不可少的,而论据不是凭空捏造的,必须通过大量的有目的的阅读才能获得。此外,在发言的过程中,必须要有条理地用有力的语言陈述自己的论点和论据,这样“写”就自觉地得到了锻炼。在辩论的过程中,学生会感觉此时不是拿着稿子的背诵,而是真正用英语进行思考,用英语进行交流。英语不再是书本上的语法,卷子上的习题,更不是交流中的障碍,而是真正成为传递思想,实现交流的工具。

二、英语辩论教学的可实施性

笔者曾多次带队参加全国辩论赛,并担任评委。期间了解到越来越多的高校加入议会制辩论比赛的行列,将议会制辩论引入独立学院是否可能呢?笔者坚信是可以的。通过培训,独立学院的辩手也能击败名校选手,进入全国的舞台上,宏词论道。独立学院的学生各有特色,例如传媒学院的学生,特点是开朗、活泼、善于交际沟通、热衷于国内外时政、逻辑思维能力强、能独立思考等,这些都是议会制辩手应该具备的,也是可以通过辩论培养的特点。

一、英语基本功是参加竞赛的基础,也是英语辩论能力的基础。这包括辩手的听力、口语等多方面的素质能力

我们可以应用英语竞赛平台提高英语听力,口语等水平以促进英语辩论能力的提高。因为实战出真知,辩手在辩论过程中要适应每一位对手的语音语调,这不同于我们平时练听力可以选择的材料,而作为辩手为了击败敌手不得不认真听每一个字,每一句话,这无疑对听力提高有着很大的帮助。同时,在口语的表达中我们要注意提高对语言的外在把握,如发音准确,吐字清晰,音量适中,语速合适等。而这其中语速的把握最为突出。因为选手的语速要有抑扬顿挫的效果,有重点有突出,才能让观众和评委知晓要点。此外,还要注意语音、语速、语调的和谐统一。除了对语言的外在把握,我们还应注意中英文的语言差异。因为中英文的对应有完全对应,也有部分对应。其中部分对应包括英文的意思大于汉语的对应,还有汉语的意思大于英文的对应,所以我们在运用时需要注意其中的范围,以免使自己的意思表达造成歧义。

二、一位好的辩论手应临危不乱,具备团队意识与沟通能力

临危不乱是气场上的较量,即便你方处于劣势或是出现了漏洞都必须做到头脑清醒,临危不乱才有可能扳回一局,这也是正常发挥甚至是超常发挥的保证,所以选手尤其需要在竞赛现场的不断磨练来摆脱怯场的心理压力,真正秀出自己的风采。通过竞赛平台的不断历练,选手还可以亲身经历、熟悉辩论比赛的规则和具体流程,有利于选手在正式的辩论比赛中对其做到心中有数,有条不紊。

竞赛平台中的反复练习与切磋为选手创造了一个从自身的经验和失败、对手的经验和失败中学习和进步的实例,有助于选手辩论实力的快速增强。通过竞赛平台的不断磨合,选手可以培养与他人合作、沟通的能力,因为辩论不是一个人的战斗,成员间的有效合作和沟通必不可少。

三、竞赛平台使得辩手的辩论技巧在竞赛过程中得以熟练掌握和运用

如借力打力即借对方攻击之力反击对方;顺水推舟即表面上认同对方观点,顺应对方的逻辑进行推导,并在推导中根据我方需要,设置某些符合情理的障碍,使对方观点在所增设的条件下不能成立,或得出与对方观点截然相反的结论;釜底抽薪即有预谋的提问,致对方于两难的境地,无论对方作哪种选择都于己不利。这些技巧的熟练应用都需要在竞赛中不断地磨炼。

四、开展辩论赛最重要的一点是可以提高辩手的素质与能力。这包括思维能力,认知能力,勤学好问的精神等

1.辩论赛中的点评涉及提高辩手的元思维能力。辩论结束后,评委先对每一支队伍作出评价,这种评价是根据每支队伍的主要观点作出的。通过评价,辩手可以发现自己提出的观点哪些是具有说服力的,以及哪些说服力不够,究其原因并予以改进。此过程可以有效帮助辩手在以后的辩论中自我监控,调整自己思考的切入点及逻辑性并学会自我评价。

2.英语辩论赛培养辩手的认知能力。辩论的许多环节都涉及对认知技能的培养,即对分析、推理及评价能力的培养。例如对辩题的准备及定义就涉及对分析能力的培养,辩手通常需要提前搜集各种各样的资料,并将其筛选、分类。此过程可以提高辩手的归类、识别及比较的能力。认知标准是衡量辩手思辨能力的尺度,可以帮助辩手评价自己的思辨能力。辩手能否清晰地陈述观点,所选证据是否切题,论证过程是否有条有理,能否提出更有深度的观点,以及能否灵活地变换视角,凡此种种都会影响辩手的得分。所以,辩手要尤其注重对这些方面的改进,增强其思辨的清晰性、相关性、逻辑性、深刻性及灵活性。

3.纵观每场辩论赛的辩题,辩手在准备各方面知识的过程中,都可以培养辩手好疑、好问及好学的精神。通过对一个辩题正反两方面的深刻思考,辩手会学会辩证的分析问题,认识到容忍与尊重不同意见的重要性。此外,辩手在与自己的搭档合作的过程中互相学习,有利于培养其乐于修正自己不当观点的态度及合作精神。当辩手成功地解决对方辩手提出的质询时,辩手的自信心会增强。同时,每次大约一个小时的辩论,需要每位辩手高度集中注意力,充分调动所学知识,积极思考,灵活应对。虽然这对辩手体力及脑力都是极大的挑战,但也有利于培养辩手坚毅的性格。

总而言之,一位真正的辩手需要具备多种能力。辩手需要提高个人的英语素质,知识素养等多种内外兼并的修养,需要有准确的判断能力,批判思维和辨别意识,而这些在竞赛中都可以有显而易见的提高。因而可以说,想要提高大学生的英语辩论能力,竞赛是一种必不可少的方式。给予同学们更多表现自己的平台,才会有更多优秀的辩手绽放自己的风采。
