反复做过2006年12月至2009年12月间的五六套真题和市面上挑选的五套模拟题之后, 我发现教材是四级真题和模拟题中所有知识点的源泉。四级真题就像星级饭店里摆放的正餐, 每套题都可圈可点, 就像每道菜, 且每套真题之间考查的知识点基本保持不变, 变化的只是对同一知识点的考查方式。而模拟题则像路边的普通餐馆, 每套题中有些题目设计得非常妙, 就像餐馆用来招徕顾客的特色菜。但是美中不足的是:同一套题中, 各题型难度不一, 且不同套的模拟题难度也不一致, 很难找到做真题时那种对于某个知识点似曾相识的感觉。更有一点是模拟题的硬伤, 即模拟题所给的答案, 尤其是阅读部分的答案模棱两可, 甚至是生搬硬套, 不像真题答案思路清晰, 解释到位。模拟题的效度与信度实在让人无法接受。

由以上教学实践得知, 如果想考好四级考试, 最重要的是学好教材, 在此基础上反复研究多做真题, 模拟题做两到三套就可以了。因此, 对于教材、真题和模拟题的关系, 我的结论是:教材和往年的四级真题是四级考试的真正“粮仓”。下面我就教材、四级及其真题的特点逐一说明, 并举例证明教材与真题的关系, 以及四级真题的规律性。

1. 教材

我校公共外语教学使用的教材是教育部普通高等教育“十一五”国家级规划教材《新视野大学英语》系列教材。本套教材是由外语教学与研究出版社出版、郑树堂任总主编, 依据教育部2007年7月以教高厅【2007】3号文件颁发的《大学英语课程教学要求》 (简称《课程要求》) 编写的。《课程要求》指出:“各高等学校应充分利用多媒体和网络技术, 采用新的教学模式改进原来的以教师讲授为主的单一课堂教学模式。新的教学模式应以现代信息技术, 特别是网络技术为支撑, 使英语教学不受时间和地点的限制, 朝着个性化学习、自主式学习方向发展。”在《新视野大学英语》的设计中, 《读写教程》与《听说教程》同为主教材。其中, 《读写教程》以主题为中心组织单元, 针对词汇、语法、结构、翻译、阅读等多方面提供进一步操练的内容。《新视野大学英语》通过以《听说教程》和《读写教程》为主线, 同时配合《综合训练》, 培养学生的英语综合应用能力, 特别是听说能力。

2. 英语四级

英语四级, 即CET-4, College English Test Band 4的缩写。这是由国家教育部高等教育司主持的全国性教学考试;考试的主要对象是根据教育大纲修完大学英语四级的大学本科生或研究生。大学英语四、六级标准化考试自1986年末开始筹备, 1987年正式实施, 目的是推动大学英语教学大纲的贯彻执行, 对大学生的英语能力进行客观、准确的测量, 为提高我国大学英语课程的教学质量服务。国家教育部委托“全国大学英语四、六级考试委员会” (1993年前名为“大学英语四、六级标准化考试设计组”) 负责设计、组织、管理与实施大学英语四、六级考试。

大学英语四级考试 (CET4) 的目的是推动大学英语教学大纲的贯彻执行, 对大学生的英语能力进行客观、准确的测量, 为提高我国大学英语课程的教学质量服务。

为检验大学英语四、六级考试的信度与效度, “全国大学英语四、六级考试委员会”与“英国文化委员会”合作进行了为期三年的“大学英语四、六级考试效度研究”。研究结果表明, 大学英语四、六级考试无论在信度上还是在效度上都符合大规模标准化考试的要求, 其考试结果得到了社会的承认。

大学英语四、六级考试经历了一个不断完善的过程。为提高考试的效度和信度, 近年来采取了一系列的改革措施。例如:

1) 采用新题型, 增加主观题的比例;

2) 设作文最低分, 使师生更加重视写作能力的培养;

3) 报导平均级点分, 以准确反映学校的总体教学水平。

从1999年5月起在部分院校逐步实施大学英语口语考试, 这一举措极大地推动了我国大学英语的教学。此外, 全国大学英语考试委员会已开始开展CET计算机化考试的研究, 并于2008年12月份在全国59所高校 (每所高校100名学生参加机考) 试点进行了四级机考, 从而使CET考试更具科学化和现代化。

3. 四级考试与教材的关系

现行传统纸质的四级考试的题型是2006年6月试行, 2007年1月全国实施的, 由四个部分组成, 分值如下:听力理解 (35%) , 阅读理解 (35%) , 完型填空 (10%) , 写作与翻译 (15%) 。在此暂不详述各部分考核的内容、题型与答题方式, 单就这几部分考核形式与教材的关系加以简单的描述。

先看听力理解部分, 听力理解部分占考试分值的35%, 是四级考试制胜的一个大题型。而《新视野大学英语》每册教材对英语听说能力都很侧重, 并有专门配套使用的教材《听说教程》和《视听说教程》。其中《听说教程》的体例编排非常契合四级考试题型的要求, 尤其是听力部分的短对话、长对话和短文部分。听力部分的“Understanding a Movie Dialog”其实也和四级听力考试中的“Compound Dictation”相似, 只不过选材来自于经典影片, 比四级考试的标准语速———约每分钟120词的考查方式更灵活、更生动有趣。《视听说教程》的选材则增加了口语的比重, 不但使学生听, 而且要他们说出口。因此, 这两本教材对学生的听力提高有着很大的帮助和促进作用。

再来看阅读理解、完型填空及写作与翻译, 这三部分考查的知识点和技能实际上都可以通过《新视野大学英语读写教程》获得。《读写教程》的每个单元都有两篇课文, 课文A主要教授学生如何通过skimming和scanning的阅读技巧获得文本信息, 课文B则在每篇文章之前都有一个关于阅读技巧的讲解, 并结合课文设计了习题。因此对于阅读能力的提高, 只要学生认真听讲, 练熟课文提出的技巧, 无论是快速阅读还是深度阅读, 都能得到很大的提高, 教材是培养阅读能力的重要途径。至于完形填空、写作与翻译两部分则是考查平时学生在学习教材及其他英语学习材料时对语言点的日积月累的基本功。《读写教程》每册书都循序渐进地增加了每篇课文阅读材料的字数与难度, 除个别话题外, 大多数话题都是社会热点话题, 新颖有趣。每单元前面的“Preview”部分其实都可以说是一篇或发人深省的或其人心智的小演讲, 并且课后的习题与课文内容密切相关。

4. 四级真题的规律性

由上所述, 我们不难看出四级考试是一场非常科学的英语标准化测试。然而细细推究, 它还有规律性的一面, 因为四级考试考查的知识点基本是固定的, 不同的是考核方式。下面举三个实例证明四级考试的规律性 (例题出自2006—2009年12月份及2006年、2008年6月份共六套真题中) 。

例一:in much the same way—“在很大程度上”

四级考试对本词组的考查分别在2006年6月份完形填空第78题, 和2007年12月份完形填空第72题中出现, 只是出题点不同, 请看此知识点在上述两套真题中出处。

由上可见, 两套题考查同一个知识点, 只是变化了考查方式, 一个是让选择单词same, 另一个则是让选出单词much。我猜测再次考查此知识点的话, 该是考查单词as了。

例二:derive—“来自, 源自”

这个单词的考查分别在2007年12月的完形填空第69题和2008年12 月份阅读理解15选10题型的单词备选项中出现。原题出处如下:

写作题目之变化：增加辅助要求，混淆写作主题

在讲述2011年12月四级写作真题发生的变化之前，考生请观察和比较下表中2011年6月与2011年12月的四级写作真题的题目要求(Direction)与写作大纲(Outline)。

从上述的表格对比中，考生可以看到，2011年12月四级写作真题除了对文章字数有了新要求外，还有如下两个比较显著的变化。

1. 2011年6月的题目要求是直接告知主题，要求考生进行阐述。2011年12月的题目要求中增加了一个辅助要求，即要求考生对“戒烟是世上最容易的事情，我已经戒了几百次了”(Quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I’ve done it hundreds of time.) 这句话进行评论，并将其与文章主题进行联系。

2. 2011年6月的写作题目为利弊对比，要求考生针对网上购物的好处和坏处进行对比。而2011年12月的写作题目其实是要考生论述一个问题的两个方面：①完成伟大使命需要坚强的意志；②成为有用之才也需要坚强的意志。

面对以上两大变化，不少考生会在细节上遇到以下三大困难。

1. 当考生看到文章的主题是“意志力”，而且又增加了评价“戒烟”这一辅助要求时，会很犯难，不知该从何处入手，因为他们发现自己平时准备的框架句基本用不上，如“近来有一种……的社会现象” “一些人认为……，另一些人认为……”等。

2. 考生可能不知如何将“戒烟”与“坚强的意志力”这个主题联系起来。这个问题对于写作经验丰富、表达能力较强的考生来说不是问题，但如果考生英语基础较弱，考前只是准备了一些框架句型，写作时就会遇到很大困难。

3. 在写作第二段和第三段时，考生会发现无法套用以往真题的写作思路，通过利弊对比来完成写作，而是需要分别从宏观角度(伟大使命)和微观角度(成为有用之才)来阐述“意志力”这一主题。考生还需要思考如何对“意志坚强的人才能完成使命”和“学生为何靠意志坚强才能成为有用之才”这两个观点进行延伸。

应对变化之策略：认真审题，学会延伸

面对这次四级写作真题的变化，如果考生遇到了上面提到的三大困难，那么在写作时须做到以下两点：①写第一段时，重视审题，学会改写；②写第二段和第三段时，学会写延伸句，使内容充实。下面笔者就每一个段落的具体写法做详细讲解。

第一段

本次写作题目增加的辅助要求导致第一段的写作难度加大。但是，考生如果认真审题并学会对题目进行改写，就能很好地应对。

通过认真审题，考生可以发现本次写作主题与辅助要求之间存在的关系。题目要求中的entitled (以……命名)暗示了本次考试的写作主题就是该单词后面的“Nothing Succeeds Without a Strong Will”，而题目要求中的commenting on (对……进行评价)则是暗示考生要对“Quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I’ve done it hundreds of time”这一说法进行评价。如此审题之后，第一段的写作思路就清晰了：对“戒烟”进行评价，然后引出“坚强的意志对成功很重要”这一主题。

形成写作思路之后，考生就要具体思考如何着手写第一段了。如果考生基础差，可以通过直接改写已知的文章题目“Nothing Succeeds Without a Strong Will”来完成第一段的写作。考生只需用一个形容词对“戒烟引言”进行定性评价，然后将文章题目略作改写，说“意志力对成功很重要”即可。比如，考生可以这样写文章的第一段：

The saying that “quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world and I have done it hundreds of times” is very interesting. But it does illustrate the truth that a strong will really matters for one’s success in anything.

如果考生想不到interesting等形容词，也可以直接用题目要求出现的humorous来代替。这样的写法简单方便，而且容易上手，对于基础薄弱的考生而言是一个极好的选择。

第二段

第二段要求考生论述“意志坚定的人才能完成伟大使命”这一观点。建议考生写这一段时采用“主题句+延伸句”的写作思路：首先在段落首句点明主题，然后论述为什么意志坚强的人才能完成伟大使命。考生可以从以下三个方面来论述该段主题：①坚强的意志可以让人忍受完成任务过程中出现的艰难困苦；②坚强的意志可以让人以坚忍不拔的精神去探索；③只有意志坚强的人才能努力奋进，承担责任，最终开辟自己的事业。考生可以这样来写第二段：

Only people with a strong will can achieve great things. With a strong will, people can endure hardship and challenges during the process of accomplishing their tasks. As a result, it is possible for them to cultivate a spirit of fortitude and explore a world full of uncertainties. Only with a strong will are they likely to strive for their goals, shoulder responsibilities and further their cause.

如果考生觉得这样写过于空泛，也可以利用举例法对观点进行延伸，只需要举个成功人士的例子即可，比如将第二段写成：

Only people with a strong will can achieve great things. Take Bill Gates for example: thanks to his strong will, he endured hardship and challenges during the process of creating the Windows computer system. As a result, he cultivated a spirit of fortitude and explored a world full of uncertainties. He strove for his goal, shouldered his responsibilities and created the Microsoft Company.

第三段

第三段的写作与第二段类似，也是采取“主题句+延伸句”的写法。写主题句时，考生应强调意志力对学生来说同样重要，然后根据题目要求，说明这种意志力主要体现在刻苦学习上。接下来，考生可以从以下三个方面论述“具有坚强意志的学生能够收获什么”：①意志坚强的学生能克服困难，获得更多知识；②意志坚强的学生更有勇气和毅力，更容易获得分析问题、解决问题的能力；③意志坚强的学生更容易融入社会，在人才市场上更富有竞争力。比如，考生可以这样写第三段：

与往年相比，本次四级写作真题的难点在于如何在首段将“戒烟”这一细节与文章主题“意志力”联系起来。至于第二段与第三段的写作，则与以往考试中“现象阐述型”的写作题目并无多大差别，主要考查考生对主题进行延伸和展开的能力。那么，考生该如何备考四级写作才能做到以不变应万变呢？下面笔者就主要从两个方面来探讨。

1. 对于第一段的写作，考生可固定模板框架，以不变应万变。

所谓固定模板框架，并非是让考生背诵“一些人认为……，另一些人认为……”这样的套话，而是多总结在第一段写作中经常用的表达。笔者建议考生多整理与“我支持”“我反对”“很重要”“要重视”这些内容有关的表达，这样写文章首段时就会有话可说了，如“I’m in favor of the opinion/remark that …”“I shed doubt to the opinion/remark that …” “… really matters”“Sb. gives priority to …”。

2. 对于第二段和第三段的写作，考生需多阅读、勤整理，积累素材。

第二段和第三段是文章的核心，是考生需要论述主题的部分。这两个段落的写作不能依靠框架句的背诵来解决，而是需要考生实打实地积累素材和相关延伸句。笔者建议考生平时练习时多阅读、勤整理。
