对于即将踏入社会的大四学生来说, 英语口语焦虑不仅影响其在学校的学习表现, 同时影响其在求职面试中的表现, 这关系着其对未来的职业选择以及求职的成功。因此, 对他们在求职中的英语口语焦虑进行研究十分必要。

1 研究方法

1.1 被试

本研究被试是杭州电子科技大学2007级33名英语专业应届本科毕业生, 其中男生11人, 女生22人。

1.2 研究工具

本研究主要采用问卷调查的形式进行。问卷由三部分组成, 第一部分为被试者的基本信息。第二部分是对焦虑的调查, 其中大部分问题参考刘聪慧 (2008.5) 所设计的问卷, 部分问题在选入时经过一定的调整, 部分问题是反向设计的。所有问题分从“1”到“5”五级。

问卷是开学之初, 由英语专业大四学生中参加过英语面试的学生现场填写和网上填写完成。本研究总共发出问卷50份, 收回33份, 其中有效问卷30份。问卷收回后, 被进行初步整理、排序, 然后进行电脑录入, 运用SPSS13.0对反向问题重新编码, 最终达到统计要求。

2 研究结果与分析

2.1 受试者求职面试英语口语焦虑整体分布

为了了解受试者求职面试英语口语焦虑整体分布情况, 我们对各焦虑值做了描述统计分析, 结果见表1:

从表1可以看出被试者对于求职面试中不能流利的讲出英语句子感到很焦虑, 是所有焦虑表现中的第一位, 这种专业知识的欠缺让测试者信心不足。同时心跳厉害也是面试时的普遍现象, 占第二位。测试者认为与自己同时参加面试的竞争者比自己优秀, 导致他们焦虑不安, 其焦虑表现占据第三。测试者在面试当中基本处于精神高度集中状态, 因此在所测试的焦虑表现中测试者“总是想到与面试无关的事”这一焦虑值最低。

2.2 男、女受试者求职面试英语口语焦虑总体情况对比

为了对比男女受试者英语口语焦虑总体情况, 我们对其焦虑值做了独立样本T检验, 结果见表2:

从表2可以看出男性受试者的焦虑平均值 (31.3636) 低于女性受试者 (33.2727) , 但二者

并不具备统计意义上的显著差异。因为对于大四学生而言, 无论男女都存在着就业压力, 并且来自同一个学校的英语专业, 他们的学习生活环境都有着共性。不过, 我们也可以看到虽然无显著差异, 女生的焦虑还是略微高于男生, 女生受到自身人格特征的影响, 在沟通交流、展示自我上显得更为矜持、更为内向[5]。

2.3 受试者口语能力自我评价与求职面试英语口语焦虑

在对自我口语能力的认识方面, 9名受试者认为自己的口语能力较好, 23人认为口语能力一般, 1人认为自己的口语很差。我们对前两类受试者的焦虑情况进行了独立样本T检验, 结果见表3:

从表3可以看出, 认为自己口语能力较好的受试者的焦虑平均值 (27.222) 低于认为口语能力一般的受试者 (34.3043) , 二者的差异接近统计上的显著水平 (P=.062) 。认为自己口语能力较好的受试者在面试时对自己的专业水平具有信心, 因此对于听不懂面试官问话或回答不出面试官所提出的问题等这一类情况显得不那么焦虑, 与一般的受试者相比具有焦虑优势。因为其认为自己口语水平较好, 因此在回答问题时就能表现得自信自然, 这会给面试官留下好印象而使是面试官的态度有所改变。如此一来, 面试者就可能掌握面试气氛, 焦虑有可能进一步降低。

2.4 受试者对外界评价的在乎程度与求职面试英语口语焦虑

为探究受试者对外界评价的程度与求职面试英语口语焦虑的相关性, 我们对二者做了皮尔逊相关分析, 结果见表4:

从表4可以看出受试者对外界评价的在乎程度与求职面试英语口语焦虑呈显著正相关, 即受试者越在乎外界评价, 他们的求职面试英语口语焦虑程度也就越大。对于受试者来说, 面试成功不仅关系着自己的职业生涯, 也关系着自己的自尊心。当自己面试成功时, 老师赞赏的眼光, 同学羡慕的眼神都会让面试者觉得自己是成功者, 自尊心得到极大满足。相反, 如果面试失败, 受试者会觉得自己在老师同学心目中失去了地位, 严重打击自信心与自尊心。因为有这一原因, 在面试时受试者会很在意面试成功与否, 同时也会在意面试官的看法, 焦虑程度自然而然的处于了高水平。

3 结论与建议

本研究通过分析发现:1) 在所测试的焦虑表现当中, 测试者想不起英语优美句子所引起的焦虑程度最高。2) 对于求职面试中的英语口语焦虑来说, 虽然女生焦虑略高于男生, 但从统计角度看, 男女焦虑差异并不显著。3) 受试者的英语口语水平自我评价与英语口语焦虑存在着极大相关性关系, 觉得口语水平较好的受试者的焦虑程度明显低于认为自己英语水平一般的受试者。4) 受试者对外界评价的在乎程度与英语口语焦虑具有显著的相关性, 对外界评价越在乎, 其焦虑程度越高。

基于以上结论和分析, 我们提出以下建议:1) 对所面试的岗位职业做好充分准备, 将面试时可能用到的英语表达认真演练。2) 英语专业学生应提高自己的专业素质。为了提高自己的英语口语水平, 英语专业学生应该多参加英语相关活动, 经常用英语交流。老师也应增强课堂的有效性, 开展互动性课程。3) 大学生应该增强自信心, 了解老师同学对自己的真实评价, 并且合理对待老师同学的眼光。老师同学也应多鼓励参加面试的同学, 增强他们的自信心, 维护他们的自尊心。

由于本文的问卷调查对象人数较少, 地域较窄, 因此本文的分析结果并不一定全面。不过, 本文所提出的求职面试中的英语口语焦虑研究, 值得更多的研究者探讨。

系统功能语法的创始人韩礼德最早提出语法隐喻理论。他根据语法结构和其所体现的意义功能是否一致,把二者关系分为一致式的体现关系和非一致式的体现关系;他又根据非一致式所体现的语言元功能将语法隐喻分为概念语法隐喻和人际语法隐喻,前者主要包括及物性隐喻和名词化,后者包括语气隐喻和情态隐喻。目前,有关语法隐喻的研究大都以科技语篇、新闻报道、就职演讲以及小说和电影中的人际隐喻为主。本文着重对英语求职信的人际语法隐喻现象进行探索性分析和解释,旨在发现英语求职信中所包含的语用功能,帮助求职者更好地认识和理解求职信这一促销体裁的独特之处。

二、理论基础

人际语法隐喻是指人们在日常交际中,为了建立得体的人际关系,一方面要真实地表述客观世界,另一方面又要表达自己的主观思想、愿望、判断和评价。人际意义主要由说话人的语气和情态来表现,所以人际语法隐喻可分为语气隐喻和情态隐喻。

语气隐喻:系统功能语法根据话语参与者在交际中所扮演的角色(给予或求取) 以及交际中的交流物(物品、服务或信息)认为英语可以分为提供、陈述、命令、疑问等4种主要类型的言语功能。语气与言语功能之间又存在着密切的关系。人们普遍认为实现疑问功能的是疑问语气,实现陈述功能的是陈述语气,实现命令功能的是祈使语气,实现提供功能的可以是几种不同的语气。

三、英语求职信中的人际隐喻及其语用功能

求职信又称“自荐信”或“自荐书”,是求职者通过书面形式与用人单位进行沟通、交流、协商,从而获得面试机会、谋求工作职位的交际手段。它是求职者就自己的资质能力的一种推销。因此和商务促销书一样,求职信就是把自己当做一件商品推销出去的一种商业函件,其主要的交际功能包括“表明兴趣”,“证明自身资历”,“礼貌索求回复”等。Thompson认为,人际功能主要指的是人们用语言来互相交流,用语言来建立和保持人际关系,用语言来影响别人的行为等。毋庸置疑,在英语求职信中运用语气隐喻和情态隐喻,有利于帮助求职者与雇主建立和协商人际关系,达到其交际目的。下面将具体介绍语气隐喻和情态隐喻是如何在英语求职信中实现礼貌性、推销性以及语篇衔接作用的。

1.礼貌性。在实际的言语交际过程中,由于招聘者和应聘者双方在地位和权势上处于不平等的关系,(也就是说求职是否成功,决定权掌握在招聘单位手里),求职者书写求职信时不得不时刻考虑怎样迎合用人单位。因此在激烈的求职竞争中,如何给用人单位留下良好的印象,态度是否诚恳、语气是否礼貌显得至关重要。礼貌原则要求求职者在求职信中更加注重情态系统和语气系统的选用。Brown与Levinson认为,带有命令功能的商务信函在本质上对收信人具有强制性,是属于威胁收信人面子的行为,因此写信人必须借助礼貌策略以挽救收信人的面子。[5]求职信作为一种商务信函,也不例外。即便求职者应在书信中要实现一些命令功能如请求功能等,也应该避免使用命令语气。

2.推销性。首先,推销性体现在语气系统上。求职信本质上就是求职者自己推销自己。为了突出自己,求职者往往用大量的篇幅介绍自己,从点明求职动机,到展示自己能力、经验、特长、业绩,再到阐述如何将上述资质和雇主需求相联系为雇主带来切实利益、创造更多价值。而这一特点决定了陈述语气的陈述句在求职信中占大多数;相比之下,疑问语气和祈使语气则很少出现。由于求职信就是向雇主推销自己,提供个人相关信息,并非是向对方求取信息,因此一般情况下不会出现疑问语气;同时,祈使语气是来实现命令功能的,语气僵硬,不够委婉,因此陈述语气一般会取而代之隐喻地实现表达命令这一言语功能,从而能够保全雇主面子。其次,推销性也体现在情态隐喻方面。在接下来的例句,本人将着重分析陈述句的语气和情态特点。
