I have never been to Troy, but David Maule made me feel as if I were standing on the high wall of Troy, watching the fierce war.Thanks to this British author, who adapted the famous Homer’s poem into a lively story, I found it easier to understand this story.Though the story happened over 3000 years ago in a remote place, I was deeply fascinated by it.The mysterious plot is one of the reasons why I loved The Story of Troy so much, yet I am more interested in the human heroes of the war.Hector was the eldest son of king of Troy, Priam.He was not only a real hero of Trojan, but was regarded the highest moral hero in Greek classic by later historians.The war started because of the mischief of his brother, Paris, whom he didn’t appreciate.However, since Hector was the commander of the Trojan army, he was obliged to fight with all force.It was really a tragedy that such a valiant man died in the duel with another great warrior, Achilles.It is natural to see death in a war.As a famous Chinese parable says, “A life can be as slight as a piece of feather, or as weighty as Mount Tai.” Sometimes, one’s glory walks hand in hand with one’s doom.Achilles was such a typical person.His personal charm made The Story of Troy more attractive.He was so crucial because his every appearance in a war encouraged his fellow soldiers and terrified the enemies.Actually, Achilles was half-god who was almost invincible in people’s mind.That’s why his name was memorized long after his death.Besides the two great men, the wisdom of Odysseus also proved him to be a great hero.He didn’t want to attend the war because he was happily married and had a lovely son.However, since his country was allied to Mycenae, he had to take the command given by the king of Mycenae.I’m quite sure that the story of the wooden horse is widely known, however, few people know who thought of the brilliant idea, that’s why I admired Odysseus so much because he was the person who got the idea.Thanks to the horse, the ten-year war came to an end at last.If you want to know how the wooden horse worked, just read the book.The ancient Greeks believed that the gods and goddesses also played important roles in the origin, process and ending of the whole story.The story of the golden apple was such an example.When Eris, the goddess of argument and disagreement, threw out the golden apple to a wedding ceremony on Mount Olympus, a dispute happened.Hera, the queen of gods, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, were all involved in the argument for the apple.None of them was willing to give way, so they turned to Paris for a final judgment.Tempted by Aphrodite’s beauty and promise, Paris handed the apple to her.To keep her word, Aphrodite helped him to get Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, as his wife.That was the cause of the war.Paris’s choice obviously annoyed the other two goddesses.So during the war, they helped the Greek alliance army while some other gods, such as Apollo and Aphrodite, guarded Troy.When Paris dueled with Helen’s former husband Menelaus, Aphrodite saved Paris when he was about to be finished off.After the duel between those two people, there was a truce between the Greek alliance and Troy.However, both Hera and Athena were not happy to see it.Hera pursued her husband ZEUS:“ Now, will you send Athena to make the Troyjans break the peace?”(Page 22)Then with Zeus’s permission, Athena went down to start the war again and finally she brought the Greeks to success.From the whole story, we can see that in ancient Greeks’ view, gods sometimes played a much more important role in their life.However, with the rapid development of science, we have learned that the Greek gods never existed.This is why a recent movie of Troy has not mentioned a single god.Everything happened due to men’s ambition, love, loyalty or jealousy.With those emotion and people’s effort, we human beings can accomplish wonders and be master of the world.God are of less importance than they used to be.Nonetheless, the gods and goddesses made The Story of Troy more mysterious and marvelous.I have learnt from the book more than the wonderful story of history, love and war.I believe that human can determine their destiny by their own.I highly recommend this book to my friends with the same interest.

Hector was the eldest son of king of Troy, priam.He was not only a real hero of Trojan, but was regarded the highest moral hero in Greek classic by later historians.The war started because of the mischief of his brother, paris, whom he didn’t appreciate.However, since Hector was the commander of the Trojan army, he was obliged to fight with all force.It was really a tragedy that such a valiant man died in the duel with another great warrior, Achilles.

It is natural to see death in a war.As a famous Chinese parable says, “A life can be as slight as a piece of feather, or as weighty as Mount Tai.” Sometimes, one’s glory walks hand in hand with one’s doom.Achilles was such a typical person.His personal charm made The Story of Troy more attractive.He was so crucial because his every appearance in a war encouraged his fellow soldiers and terrified the enemies.Actually, Achilles was half-god who was almost invincible in people’s mind.That’s why his name was memorized long after his death.

Besides the two great men, the wisdom of Odysseus also proved him to be a great hero.He didn’t want to attend the war because he was happily married and had a lovely son.However, since his country was allied to Mycenae, he had to take the command given by the king of Mycenae.I’m quite sure that the story of the wooden horse is widely known, however, few people know who thought of the brilliant idea, that’s why I admired Odysseus so much because he was the person who got the idea.Thanks to the horse, the ten-year war came to an end at last.If you want to know how the wooden horse worked, just read the book.

The ancient Greeks believed that the gods and goddesses also played important roles in the origin, process and ending of the whole story.

The story of the golden apple was such an example.When Eris, the goddess of argument and disagreement, threw out the golden apple to a wedding ceremony on Mount Olympus, a dispute happened.Hera, the queen of gods, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, were all involved in the argument for the apple.None of them was willing to give way, so they turned to paris for a final judgment.Tempted by Aphrodite’s beauty and promise, paris handed the apple to her.To keep her word, Aphrodite helped him to get Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, as his wife.That was the cause of the war.

paris’s choice obviously annoyed the other two goddesses.So during the war, they helped the Greek alliance army while some other gods, such as Apollo and Aphrodite, guarded Troy.When paris dueled with Helen’s former husband Menelaus, Aphrodite saved paris when he was about to be finished off.

After the duel between those two people, there was a truce between the Greek alliance and Troy.However, both Hera and Athena were not happy to see it.Hera pursued her husband ZEUS:“ Now, will you send Athena to make the Troyjans break the peace?”(page 22)Then with Zeus’s permission, Athena went down to start the war again and finally she brought the Greeks to success.

From the whole story, we can see that in ancient Greeks’ view, gods sometimes played a much more important role in their life.However, with the rapid development of science, we have learned that the Greek gods never existed.This is why a recent movie of Troy has not mentioned a single god.Everything happened due to men’s ambition, love, loyalty or jealousy.With those emotion and people’s effort, we human beings can accomplish wonders and be master of the world.

Greek mythology is the body of myths and legends belonging to the ancient Greeks,concerning their gods and heroes,the nature of the world,and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices.They were a part of religion in ancient Greece.Modern scholars refer to,and study,the myths,in an attempt to throw light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece,its civilization,and to gain understanding of the nature of myth-making itself.Greek myth attempts to explain the origins of the world,and details the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods,goddesses,heroes,heroines,and mythological creatures.

A film,also called a movie or motion picture,is a series of still or moving images.It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras,or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects.And for this paper,the author takes three films which are Troy,Babel and Inception as analysis targets so as to make people know more about the background culture and inspire the sensitivity of appreciating films.

2 Analyses of the Three Films

2.1 Troy

Troy,the film that is directed by Wolfgang Petersen,is produced in the year 2004 which is adapted from the widely known ancient Greek myth Trojan War originally centered in Holmes’epics Iliad.In this film,many elements of ancient Greek myths are involved;therefore if people want to understand it better,the certain knowledge of the mythological background is indeed necessary.

2.1.1 Birth of War

In the film,the birth of the war is caused by the elopement of Paris and Helen,but in fact it could be traced more backwards to the fight for the Golden Apple of three goddesses who are Hera,Athena and Aphrodite.The apple was claimed by Hera,Athena,and Aphrodite.They quarreled bitterly over it,and none of the other gods would venture an opinion favoring one,for fear of earning the enmity of the other two.Eventually,Zeus ordered Hermes to lead the three goddesses to Paris,a prince of Troy.Paris was unable to decide between them,so the goddesses resorted to bribes.Since Aphrodite offered him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world,Helen of Sparta.Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite who realized her promise thus cause the ten years long Trojan War.

2.1.2 Achilles heel

Achilles is a core hero of Greece in Trojan War.As long as he is in the army,they will win the war,although there are a lot of disagreements between him and Agamemnon who is another main character in the film.Achilles is the son of Peleus and Thetis.His mother Thetis bathed him in the River Styx,the river that runs to the underworld,making him invulnerable wherever he had touched the water.However,later Apollo gives the secret away to Paris so that Paris could discharge an arrow in his heel that brought him to death.In this film,this myth has not been mentioned so that some audience who do not know this story may feel confused that why such a hero is easily dead from just an arrow in his heel.

2.1.3 Fate of Agamemnon

In the film Agamemnon is an ambitious and arbitrary politician.As a general of the army,the contradiction between him and Achilles has long been established.After Helen was taken away by Paris,Greek army launched a large number of ships to attack Troy.Agamemnon was in a dilemma but finally he decided to sacrifice his daughter,so he lied to his wife and his daughter that he wanted them to come for Achilles marrying his daughter.When his wife and daughter arrived only to find that it is a lie,they were very upset.These events are all the reasons for later Agamemnon’s tragic life.While in the film Agamemnon was not died in the hand of his wife but another woman who is loved by both Agamemnon and Achilles which is a little bit different from the original myth,but there is one same point which is shared by both editions that is Agamemnon,a superhero who did not die in the fight of war but in the hand of woman.

2.1.4 Comments

Actually this story is a typical ancient Greek myth in which many of the gods and goddesses are involved.Except that this film is a successful piece of work which makes people more familiar with the ancient glorious legends and drive people to inquire more information about this story from which the author believes that films are making a great contribution to the spread of ancient cultures to a much more developed modern society.

2.2 Oedipus Rex

Oedipus Rex is a film which is directed by the famous director Pier Paolo Pasolini who has directed a series of classical films such as Medea and so on.Pasolini is a great master of the post Neo-realism era and this work is recognized as his autobiography and also the most successful one.He used his unique Pasolini’s way of expressing to make a totally new elaboration to the classical ancient Greek tragedy.

2.2.1 The Story

A son is born to a young couple in pre-war Italy.The father,motivated by jealousy,takes the baby into the desert to be aban-doned,at which point the film’s setting changes to the ancientworld.The child is rescued,named Edipo by King Polybus(Ahmed Belhachmi)and Queen Merope(Alida Valli)of Corinthand raised as their own son.When Edipo(Franco Citti)learns ofa prophesy foretelling that he will kill his father and marry hismother,he leaves Corinth believing that Polybus and Merope arehis true parents.

2.2.2 Analysis and Comments

The main plot is in accordance with the original work but Pa-solini endowed some new understanding to his masterpiece.Moreimportantly,the director changed the framework of telling the sto-ry.In the original work,the author put the riddle bottom at theend of the story that is when Oedipus finds that he is the cursedperson at all,while in the film the director uncovers the answerat the beginning of the film which gives the audience a better op-portunity to enjoy the whole process of the movie.All in all Paso-lini reveals the typical things and incidents of the ancient Greecewhich hammer the image of a remote harsh and desolated king-dom deeply in the hearts of the audience.

2.3 Inception

2.3.1 The Story

Inception is a 2010 science fiction action heist film written,co-produced,and directed by Christopher Nolan.This film seemsto have nothing to do with the ancient Greek myths,but in fact ithas a lot of clues to the myths if we know enough about themyths which make the film endowed with a deeper indication ofeach character in the story.The names of the main characters arenot arbitrarily settled but purposefully set.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays Dom Cobb,a specialized corporatespy and thief.His work consists of secretly extracting valuablecommercial information from the unconscious minds of his targetswhile they are asleep and dreaming.Wanted for murder and un-able to visit his children,Cobb is offered a chance to regain hisold life as payment for a task considered to be impossible:“incep-tion”,the planting of an original idea into a target’s subconscious.

2.3.2 Relevant Elements Analysis

The secret actually hides in the names of the main charac-ters.First let’s see the cast of the film.

“The Extractor”(盗梦人)—Dom Cobb

“The Architect”(筑梦师)Ariadne

“The Point Man”(前哨者)Arthur

“The Shade”(魅影)Mal

“The Forger”(伪造者)Eames

“The Tourist”(游客)Saito

“The Chemist”(药剂师)Yusuf

“The Mark”(目标)Robert Fischer,Jr.

In fact not all the characters are related to the ancient Greek myths,but every character in this film has a background story of their names and the author gives two examples of them which are respectively related to the former film of the director and the ancient Greek myth.

Some intelligent people also come up with an interesting idea that those names could form the word“dreams”perfectly which we could not know that if it is set on purpose by the director.Each letter represents a certain name as follows:

Dreams:

D=Dom·Cobb

R=Robert·Fisher

E=Eames

A=Arthur/Araidne

M=Mal

S=Satio
