谜语是一种开发智力、启发思维、激发创造力的语言游戏。谜语通俗易懂, 在西方国家十分流行, 因此, 从文化的角度研究英语谜语有助于了解西方人的兴趣爱好、宗教信仰及生活习惯。
2 谜语的定义
谜语是指暗射文字、事物让人根据字面说出答案的隐语。它将某一种事物或词语做为谜底, 用形似、隐喻、暗示或描写其特点的方法做为谜面, 让人们进行猜测的文字游戏。谜语主要指暗射事物或文字等供人猜测的隐语, 也可引申为蕴含奥秘的事物。《牛津英语民俗词典》的定义是“Riddle refers to a word game or joke, comprising a question or statement couched in deliberately puzzling terms, propounded for solving by the hearer/reader using clues embedded within that wording.”《现代高级英汉双解词典》的定义则为“English riddles are puzzling questions、statement or descriptions, intended to make a person use his wits.”“Riddle”一词在中世纪称为redels、ridel, 在古英语中称为raedels, 意思为意见、看法。谜语是世界各民族共有的一种民间文学体裁, 是人类智慧的结晶。它有一定的知识性和趣味性, 深受广大人民群众的喜爱。
3 英语谜语的历史
英文谜语同中国谜语一样有着极其悠久的历史。据记载, 西方最早出现于古希腊神话“斯芬克斯之谜”里。“斯芬克斯”一词源于希腊语Sphinx, 是希腊神话中的一个可怕的怪物, 它宛如巨大的雄狮, 拥有锐利的毒爪, 背上的黑翼可以遮蔽苍空, 但头部却是一个美丽的女人!传说, 赫拉或阿瑞斯把狮身人面的斯芬克司从她的家乡古埃塞俄比亚派到希腊的底比斯城做守护者。生性凶残的斯芬克斯经常守在大路口, 让路过的人猜谜, 猜错了就要被吃掉。一次, 一位国王的儿子被吃了, 国王很生气, 做出悬赏:“谁能制服这个怪兽, 就把王位让给他。”青年俄狄浦斯 (Oedipus) 应召而去, 快猜出了谜底, 斯芬克斯羞愧得坠崖而死。这个闻名于世界的的谜语就是:“Which creature in the morning goes on four legs, at mid-day on two, and in the evening upon three, and the more legs it has, the weaker it be?”它也可以说成:“What goes on four legs at dawn, two at noon, and three at dusk?”翻译成中文就是“何物早晨四脚走, 中午两脚走, 晚上三脚走”。谜底是Man/People—who crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and then walks with a cane in old age.人在婴儿时用四肢爬行, 成年以后用两腿行走, 年老后则拄着拐杖走路, 因此谜底就是“人”。
其实, 西方谜语的最初起源, 与当时人们生活的实际需要息息相关。文字出现之前就有谜语。古时候的西方人在生活上总觉得外界到处有致命的敌意存在, 因此想方设法摆脱危害。英语谜语的历史可以追溯到古英语时代, 当时的谜语中有99则谜语一直流传至今。在《圣经·士师记》中可以找到这样的故事, 勇猛的大力士参孙制服并且杀死了一头狮子, 在狮子的尸体里找到了一群蜜蜂和蜂蜜, 就这件事他想到了这样一则谜语:“Out of the eater came something to eat;Out of the strong came something sweet.”他让菲利士人猜这则谜语, 并承诺如果七天之内说出谜底, 就会送他们三十套衣服和三十套亚麻布长袍;如果给不出答案, 他们就得给他这些东西。狡猾的菲利士人让参孙的妻子哄骗参孙说出谜底。在第七天日落之前, 菲利士人给出的答案:What is sweeter than honey?/What is stronger than a lion?
谜语也增加了侦探小说的销量。如欧洲惊险小说《花园疑云》、《无脸杀手》都因有谜语而成为最畅销书籍。2003年, 美国作家丹·布朗《达芬奇密码》更是以全球36万的销量创造了畅销书的奇迹。它的成功在于给读者带来悬念和暗示的谜语和字谜。
4 英语谜语及文化
英语谜语的巧妙构思与西方的文化和习俗是密不可分的。谜语从各个方面反映着西方的文化。
(1) What country is popular on Thanksgiving Day?Turkey (Turkey) .感恩节那天哪个国家最受欢迎?土耳其 (火鸡) 。
感恩节是美国和加拿大的节日, 由美国首创, 原意是为了感谢印第安人, 后来人们常在这一天感谢他人。自1941年起, 感恩节是在每年11月的第四个星期四, 在这一天起将休假两天, 和自己的家人团聚, 不管多忙 (有些特殊岗位除外) 都是如此。火鸡是感恩节的传统主菜, 每逢感恩节, 美国人必有可口的火鸡。“Turkey”是个一词多义的词, 当“T”大写时, 这个词的意思为国名“土耳其”, 而平时其意思为“火鸡”。在感恩节最受欢迎的国家当然是土耳其了, 因为它也是火鸡。我们也通过这则谜语了解了感恩节有着吃火鸡的习俗。
(2) Who may marry many a wife and still be single?A clergyman or a priest.谁娶了很多妻子 (给很多妻子证婚) 还是单身?一个牧师或神父。
乍看这则谜语, 感觉很不合理, 一个男人怎么可能娶了几个老婆还单身呢?在这个谜语中“marry many a wife”等于“marry many wives”。而玄机就在marry一词上, marry除了“跟……结婚”的意思外, 还有“给……证婚”即“为一对夫妇主持婚礼”的意思。如:The local priest married them.基督教的神父就是给很多夫妻证婚而仍然是单身。这则谜语反映了西方的基督教文化。
(3) Why are the Middle Ages called the Dark Ages?Because there were so many knights (nights) in them.中世纪为什么被称作黑暗时代?因为有很多骑士 (夜晚) 。
中世纪 (Middle Ages) (约公元476年—公元1453年) , 是欧洲历史的一个重要的时代 (主要是西欧) , 由西罗马帝国灭亡 (公元476年) 的数百年之后, 封建制度在世界范围内占统治地位的时期开始, 到文艺复兴时期 (公元1453年) 之后, 资本主义抬头时期为止。15世纪后期的人文主义者开始使用“中世纪”一词, 这一时期的欧洲不受任何强有力的政权统治。因为大部份的罗马文明在这段期间受到破坏, 并且被蛮族文化所取代, 因此中世纪或中世纪早期在欧美普遍被称为“黑暗时代”。在中世纪, 出身贵族的男孩会从小接受严格的训练成为扈从, 在各方面能力都有提升后, 合格的候选人就会被授予骑士 (knight) 称号。“knights”和“nights”是同音异形字, 有很多骑士也可以说成有很多夜晚, 因此中世纪是“黑暗的时代”。我们可以通过这则谜语了解欧洲中世纪的历史。
