篇3：浅析网络热门词汇的汉英译

据有关数据显示, 截至2011年12月底, 中国网民数达到3.56亿, 占全球网民总数的69.4%。随着网络时代的快速发展, 不少网络词汇脱颖而出, 受到大众尤其是年轻人的追捧, 并已逐渐演变成为一种特殊的语言变体。网络热门词汇层出不穷并不仅仅是国人在自娱自乐, 许多想要了解中国文化的外国人对此也颇感兴趣, 但奈何文化背景的差异使这种不同民族间交际出现了隔阂。作为译者或是英语爱好者, 我们有义不容辞的责任 (bounden duty) 将网络热门词汇转化成为西方人能看得懂的语言。

一、网络热门词汇翻译的必要性

很多人认为网络热门词汇的翻译太过于通俗, 难登大雅之堂, 更不值得资深译者绞尽脑汁费尽心力为之奋斗。诚然, 纵观中国的汉译英历史, 翻译家们大多投身于古典文学, 诸如四书五经、唐诗宋词及中国四大名著的翻译, 因而很多此类文学作品都不只有一个译本, 当然一些汉学家也功不可没。但借用黑格尔的话“存在即是合理的” (Whatever is, is right) , 网络词汇的兴起自有其特殊的时代背景, 也是当代最引人注目的特色之一。语言本身就是一个不断发展和完善的系统, 从这个角度来看, 网络词汇反而丰富了语言的包罗万象。

笔者认为, 作为一个真正的译者, 是不应当惧怕这种挑战的。处在风云变幻的世界中, 面对不可预测的变化是常态, 接受由之而来的挑战才是勇者所为。因此, 译者需考虑的就是如何将这些新词转化为以英语为母语的人能看懂的地道语言。

有些热门词汇是从英语借来的, 外来语还好办, 直接译回即可。然而, 翻译土生土长的汉语原生词汇却相当麻烦。译界学者常常讨论“不可译性”, 有些热门词汇确实是不可译的。但是, 在翻译过程中应秉持“尽量不留空白”的原则, 将明明不可译的东西想方设法表达出来。可能有时难免有失偏颇, 但也说明实际上是不存在“不可译性”的。

网络热门词汇的翻译方法, 大致可以分为音译法、意译法、阐述译法。前人对此已做了很多分析归类, 也取得了一定成果。因此, 笔者在该文中将不对此做更多的分析, 而是重点讨论翻译热门词汇时应注意的问题。

二、网络热门词汇翻译需注意的问题

1、充分考虑西方受众者的语言习惯

英语属印欧语系, 追本溯源其老祖宗是腓尼基 (Phoenicia) 文字。这是一种抽象的、完全符号化的拼音文字。人们看到这种拼音文字后, 不可能立即把这种文字跟外部自然界联系起来。有研究称:在所有内存外在的主客观因素中, 语言是孕育、铸就人类思维模式最为至关重要的因素。因此, 西方人深受腓尼基语言文化的影响再加上“尚思”的古希腊、罗马文化传统的熏陶, 久而久之, 就形成了独特的抽象思维模式。

然而, 与英语民族的拼音文字不同, 汉字“上承陶符, 下启金文, 字符象形”, 其起源的形象是原始的图画, 后经世代演化, 逐渐改为线条即成为象形文字。因此, 从汉字发展演变过程中, 我们不难发现中国人深受“尚象”文化传统的影响, 偏向于具体的形象思维。

正是由于东西方人思维方式的差异, 导致有些在汉语中直观性较强的词语在翻译成英语后, 这种呼之欲出的形象感就不复存在或至少立体感大幅度下降了。例如“娃娃头” (pageboy stye) 、“露背装” (halter top) 、“灯笼袖” (puffed sleeve) 等。当听到“灯笼袖”时, 以中文为母语的读者脑海中马上就能浮现出“灯笼”的形象, 也就明白“灯笼袖”指的就是很宽的那种衣袖, 但译成英文后大多只能“达意”而失去了原来的形象性。如果直译为“lantern sleeve”, 外国读者反而更是丈二和尚摸不着头脑不知所云, 只能处理成“puffed sleeve”, 勉强算是将意思传达到位了。

2、保持一定的政治敏感度

中华民族深受孔孟之道的熏陶, 中庸 (the golden mean) 因而被大多数国人奉为最佳的处事原则。我国在关于大多数国际问题的回应中, 将中庸的内涵发挥得淋漓尽致, 绝不走极端。因此, 在这样一种独具中国特色的国情下, 网络语言的翻译也尤其需要注意政治影响。例如“热点问题”一般译为“hotspot issue”, 这种译法也是广为接受的;但在译“台湾问题”时, 便不能依葫芦画瓢地译成“Taiwan issue”了, 因为“issue”这个词是指颇受争议的事件, 而台湾自古以来就是中国不可分割的一部分, 因此有人建议将“台湾问题”译为“Taiwan question”。笔者认为这种译法确实有点牵强, 但至少不会携带政治上的一些敏感暗示。再举一例, “混乱”这个词在外文报纸中的常见表达是“turmoil”, “riot”等, 但中国的报纸绝不会用这个词, 相反地, 我们常见到用“unrest”来表示“混乱”的意思, China Daily一般这么用。之所以不用“turmoil”是因为这个词暗含社会动荡的意思, 与中国一直倡导的“和谐”相悖。

3、突出时代和流行语诙谐的特征

网络流行词语最能折射出时代的动态变化并且更新速度极快, 很大一部分是出自于网友的恶搞, 甚至有些词汇的出现就纯粹是出于其娱乐的目的。在做任何翻译时, 译者都必须考虑其受众对其译文的接受情况。倘若得不到读者的认可, 翻译的意义又从何谈起。而对于网络词汇的翻译尤为如此, 因为其受众者大多有追求新颖生动的审美心理和新鲜刺激的猎奇心理。因此, 在翻译这一类词汇时, 不仅要遵循“忠实”的翻译原则, 还应尊重网络受众的特殊心理特点, 尽可能地使译文达到一种诙谐幽默的效果。譬如, 眼下广为盛行的“忽悠”这个词, 原为东北方言, 相当于“愚弄”、“糊弄”或“捉弄”。倘若简单译为“to deceive”, “to cheat”这种普通的动词, 便抹杀了源语中诙谐、生动的调侃意味。而译为“to jerk sb.around”, “to hoodwink”, “to bamboozle”等俚语说法, 便更能表达出“忽悠”的细微含义 (subtle implications) , 顿时时代气息也浓郁了不少。因此, 寻找对应的俚语也不失为一种翻译的良策。

作为我国翻译实践的后起之秀, 网络热门词汇的翻译尚还属于新鲜事物, 但我们不能忽视其在中西方文化交流中扮演的重要角色, 尤其是年轻人之间的交流。展望未来, 任重而道远, 仍需很多译者和英语爱好者的不懈努力。

【关键词】词汇对比分析

一、引言

翻译是从一种语言到另一种语言的转化，这其中不仅仅是文字符号的转换，更是思想和观念的转换。而在这样一种转换里，词汇是最基本的语言材料。如果说语法结构是一句话的骨架，那么词汇就是一句话的血肉。因此词汇对语义的传达有着至关重要的作用。汉语和英语由于其产生和发展的各种因素的不同，导致两种语言在这样或那样的许多方面也有各自的特点和差异。对比汉语和英语的词汇目的在于促进人们对这两种语言词汇的了解，进而提高翻译的质量。

二、汉英词汇的对比

汉语和英语的词汇存在着四大基本特征：词汇偶合、词汇并行、词汇空缺、词汇冲突。本文就从这四个方面对汉语和英语的词汇进行对比分析。

1.词汇偶合。词汇偶合也可解释为语义的对应关系，指的是原语与译语无论在意义上还是形式结构上都十分相似、对应。尽管汉语和英语在不同的文化大背景下，但这两种语言都是在同一物质世界下产生、发展和使用。因此，就存在不少选词、用词上的相同、相近之处。这一语言特征我们称作“不同语言之间的偶合现象”。词汇偶合现象一般在描写客观事物时最为常见。例如汉语和英语把“人身体的最上部分和动物身体最前的部分”分别称为“头”和“head”，这里的“头”和“head”所指的东西一样，也就可以说彼此意义偶合。

语言学将词汇的意义分为两种，概念意义（denotative meaning）和内涵意义（connotative meaning）。汉语和英语中的一些词汇不仅概念意义相同，其内涵意义也很对应。这里，以汉语的“手”和英语的“hand”为例，这两个词在汉语和英语里的意思是：

（1）“人使用工具的上肢前端”，例如：“友谊之手”——“the hand of friendship”；“靠自己的双手劳动谋生”——“earn a living with ones hands”；

（2）“工人，雇员”，例如：“工厂人手”——“a factory hand”；“缺少人手”——“be short of hands”；

（3）“专业人员，行家”，例如：“某项工作的能手”——“a good hand of at some work”；“新手”——“a new hand”；

（4）“技艺，技能”，例如：“他的手艺荒废了”——“His hand is out”；

（5）“字迹”，例如：“手迹清楚”——“write in a clear hand”；

（6）“参与，经手”，例如：“插手某事”——“have a hand in sth”；

（7）“与数词连用，表示来源”，例如：“第二手材料”——“material at second hand”；

这里有必要说明一下，由于人们对客观世界的认识，感受不同，词汇偶合现象并不是指汉语和英语中对应的词完全的相同。换句话说，在汉语和英语选择词汇时不可能发生绝对的一致。在例子当中，即使“手”和“hand”这两个词在概念意义和一些内涵意义上相同，但并不是全部，也不是绝对的。

2.词汇并行。对于同一事物或思想，汉语和英语可能会用不同的方式进行表达。词汇并行就是用不同的词汇表达相同的意思。

在汉语和英语里，词汇并行现象较多发生在习语的表达上。虽然不同，但表达的喻意或意思是相同的。

例如，汉语中常用“如履薄冰”这个短语形容战战兢兢，小心谨慎的样子；而英语中则有“tread upon eggs”（踩在鸡蛋上）这样的说法。虽然亮两者的形式不同，但无论是“在很薄的冰面行走”还是“踩在鸡蛋上”喻意都是相同的，即小心翼翼。因此它们是并行的，相互对应的。再如，汉语中，我们用“拖人下水”比喻引诱人同流合污或陷人于不利的境地，而英语则用“drag someone through the mud”（拽人下泥潭）。这两种表达方式的形式相同，但用的词汇不同，汉语用“水”，而英语用“泥”。尽管这样，这两种表达的喻意是一样的，因此是一种词汇并行现象。

类似的例子还有很多：汉语中，我们常说“笑掉大牙”，英语却用“laugh ones head off”；汉语说“无风不起浪”，而英语则说“There is no smoke without fire”；汉语里，我们常用“金窝银窝，不如自家草窝”，英语却用“East， West， homes best”这样表达。

这样的词汇并行现象不胜枚举。这里，本文试图将其中的一些归为一类——“动物类”。在俗语中，我们经常会用动物做比喻意义，但汉语中的表达和英语中的表达常常不同。换句话说，汉语和英语经常会用不同的动物来比喻同一事情。这样的例子有很多，因此在此归为一类，希望能引起足够的重视，并便于记忆。以下为具体例子：

（1）像落汤鸡——like a drowned rat

（2）像热锅上的蚂蚁一般——like a cat on hot bricks

（3）一丘之貉——birds of a feather

（4）对牛弹琴——cast pearls before swine

牛饮——drink like a fish

力大如牛——as strong as horse

（5）害群之马——black sheep
