1.概念图的定义。概念图(concept map)是用节点表示概念,用连线及连接词表示概念间关系的一种图示方法。一般包括概念(concepts)、命题(propositions)、交叉连接(cross-links)、层级结构(hierarchical frame-works)四个基本要素。概念是指感知到的事物的规则属性;命题是两个概念之间通过某个连接词而形成的意义关系;交叉连接表示不同知识领域概念之间的相互关系;层级结构是概念的展现方式,每一个附属概念应比其上层概念更具特殊性。因而,概念图被看作是一种以科学命题的形式显示概念之间的意义联系,并用具体事例加以说明,从而把所有的基本概念有机地联系起来的空间网络结构图。

2.概念图的理论基础。

(1)David P.Ausubel有意义学习理论。Ausubel认为,人的学习应该是意义学习,影响学习的最主要因素是学习者已掌握的知识,当学习者有意义学习的意向,并把所要学的新知识同原有的知识联系起来时,意义学习便发生了。Ausubel同时对概念的形成和同化进行了区分,认为意义学习的心理机制是同化,除了学龄前儿童,学生的学习都是通过概念同化习得新概念的。概念的上位关系、下位关系和组合关系的层级排列最终形成了学生的认知结构。Ausubel强调,当学习者的新知识与原有知识结构,有意义地连结在一起时,学习便产生了。

(2)Jean Piaget图式学习理论。该理论认为,知识既不是客观的东西,也不是主观的东西,而是个体在与环境交互作用的过程中逐渐建构的结果。个体的认知图式是通过同化和顺应而不断发展,以适应新的环境。一般而言,个体每当遇到新的刺激,总是试图用原有图式去同化,若是成功,便得到暂时的平衡。若无法同化,个体便会做出顺应,即调节原有图式或重建新图式,直至达到认识上的新的平衡。学习是一种能动建构的过程,在Jean Piaget看来,学习并不是个体获得越来越多外部信息的过程,而是学到越来越多有关认识事物的程序,即建构了新的认识图式。概念图的制作从某种角度来说就是一种图式的建构,也是图式表征中最常用的一种方式。它以原有的概念或命题逐步吸纳、扩展新的概念或命题以连成知识网络,这和图式是相吻合的。

3.概念图在语篇教学中的作用。阅读活动实际就是依据读者已有的语言知识、文化知识、策略知识以及专业知识对阅读材料的释义过程。换句话说,读者理解一段文字就是激活了读者头脑中合适的图式,并用这些图式对篇章中的言语信息做出适当的说明和解释。由此可见,概念图正是通过诊断学生的前概念,促进知识的整合,改变学生的认知方式,并为知识的获得搭建一个信息交流的平台。而阅读教学则可以利用这一平台来激活图式、加强阅读监控与调节,从而从根本上提高学生的语篇阅读能力。

4.概念图在人教版高中英语新教材语篇教学中的应用。笔者现在使用的教材是人教版高中英语新教材(New Senior English For China),其中每个单元都有两个阅读语篇,它们体裁多样,题材广泛,涉及科技、航天、地理、名人、医学、环保、自然、新闻及文化遗产保护等。以选修六Unit 3 A healthy life为例,该单元的中心话题是“健康生活”。其中第一个语篇Advice from grandad是爷爷写给孙子的一封长信,以其亲身体会告知孙子抽烟易上瘾的原因,抽烟的危害和戒烟的方法。语篇不仅篇幅长,生词多且信息零散,学生阅读起来容易丢东忘西,抓不到重点。为了鼓励学生积极主动并有效地参与语篇学习,笔者运用概念图设计了以下的教学活动:

Task 1:Discuss in pairs about what kind of information you think will be introduced in the text according to the title.

任务目的:激活已有的知识和经验,训练阅读定位,预测语篇内容,培养预测技能,为实现“自上而下阅读模式”(Top-down model)提供必要条件,同时促成有意义的学习。

Task 2:Skim the text quickly and find out the main idea of the text.

任务目的:确定文章的主题。文章的标题往往是重要线索,展示概念图的第一层概念:

Task 3:Skim the text quickly and decide how many parts the text can be divided into and what the main idea of each part is.

任务目的:了解语篇的结构和各部分大意,确定概念图的第二层概念。

Task 4:Scan the text quickly and find out how many aspects each part is written in.

活动的目的:培养学生从语篇中获取特定信息的查读能力,进行“综合或交替”阅读模式(Interactive model),完成概念图的第三层概念。

Task 5:引导学生根据概念图所提供的信息,按照不同层级的概念和一定的逻辑顺序复述课文。

任务目的:这一环节旨在培养学生如新课标中所倡导的“用英语进行思维和表达的能力”。如果学生的英语基础不是很好,教师可以先带着学生复述,然后给学生提供一定的时间和空间让他们依据概念图自己复述或同伴间、小组内进行复述等,促使其内化所获取的信息,完成并强化自己的知识建构。

三、概念图在高中英语语篇教学中应用研究的进一步设想

上述仅仅是概念图在英语语篇教学中应用的初步尝试,对今后的进一步研究笔者有如下设想:

1.教师绘制概念图,让学生通过阅读语篇填出教师故意遗漏的信息。

2.教师绘制并填充部分概念图,让学生通过阅读语篇完成其余部分概念图的绘制和填充工作。

3.引导学生根据阅读语篇获取的信息独立制作概念图。

四、结束语

研究和实践证明,通过概念图在英语语篇教学中应用,能够帮助学生改变目前这种“因背景知识匮乏,词汇量欠缺而根本读不懂文章,或因语篇阅读技能低下,读过文章后大脑一片混沌,几乎不知所云”的状况。促使学生学会根据文章体裁和题材、根据不同的文章段落扩展方式提取文章信息。促使教师和学生关注英语语篇的结构特点,并能够初步掌握“时间型(chronological order)、空间位置型(spatial order)、分类型(classification)、例证型(exemplification)、定义型(definition)、程序型(process)、因果型(cause and effect)、比较—对比型(comparison and contrast)和混合型(combined methods)”等类文章的铺陈方法,从而根据不同文章的结构特点来迅速获取信息。此外,以往逐段翻译、逐句讲解的授课方式也被预测、略读、寻读、语篇逻辑建构和话题拓展等阅读任务链所取代。学生在完成循序渐进的各项阅读任务后,不但从整体上把握了语篇的主要内容,还学会了按照一定的逻辑顺序构建语篇的知识网络。因此,概念图策略的运用彻底改变了传统阅读课堂中单一而低效的授课方式,是广大英语教师组织学生进行高效语篇学习的有力工具。
